Last blog post of ENG138T!!! This is truly my last blog post that will ever be posted on Current Event for the College Student (unlike that time that I thought blog posts were over, but they weren’t). I have had a great time writing posts for this blog this year and sharing an in-depth view and a bit of my perspective of current events with my fellow college students. I have also enjoyed writing various Rhetoric and Civic Life posts which mainly related to my diverse assignments for class and writing the Civic Issues posts which explored different historical and contemporary Supreme Court Cases and their applications to today’s world. For this last blog post I would like to share how I plan on staying on top of the news and maybe give some inspiration to my readers on how they can continue to be aware of what is occurring in the world outside of the Happy Valley.

First, a few weeks ago I stumbled upon an advertisement for theSkimm. I was intrigued by their service and immediately subscribed (and I suggest that you should too!). Once you subscribe you receive an email every Monday thru Thursday from theSkimm which outlines current political and social events in a fun and engaging manner. It only takes about five minutes to read, but offers quick and through information that makes me feel as if I truly have a grasp about what is going on in the world. The only downside to this service is that you do not get the emails on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. Check out the screen shots below to get an idea of their fun and catchy reporting style!

Second, when I have a spare moment and I am on my computer I like to surf around on a few different news websites. My go to websites include The New York Times, Fox News, and USA Today College. As college students we do not have all the time in the world, so if you are just going to check out one of these sites I would recommend looking at USA Today College. The news source does not cover all of the breaking news in the United State and around the world (which you can read about in your theSkimm subscription), but covers topics that hit closer to home with college students. Being a large and renowned university, Penn State shows up on the newsfeed from time to time featuring events like THON and the restoration of Joe Paterno’s wins and some not so becoming stories such as the high tuition and recent KDR fiasco. The website also features articles that give job and internship advice, information about events around the country and world, and some fun articles such as recipes and bucket lists.

I hope that posts have helped keep you all informed about different events in the world and have inspired you to keep up with different current events!
